South Sea Pearls: generally used to refer to large white and golden saltwater pearls found in the area extending from Burma and  Indonesia down to Australia and across to French Polynesia. They tend to range in size from 8mm to 15mm in diameter. The pearls are produced in the silver lipped or gold-lipped oysters (Pinctada maxima).

Tahitian Pearls: Primarily black or grey in color and are produced by the black lipped oyster Pinctada margaritifera. This species is is found throughout the southern pacific, particularly in French Polynesia. They typically range in size from 8mm to 14mm.

Akoya Pearls: Are saltwater pearls from the Akoya oyster cultivated primarily in Japan and China. They are typically round in shape and vary in color from pink, to white, to yellowish and are typically 6.0 to 7.0mm but can range from 2mm to 10mm in diameter.

Freshwater Pearls: produced from the Hyriopsis cumingi or triangle shell mussel found in China and the Cristaria plicata mussel found in rivers and lakes of China, Vietnam, Japan and Korea.

Pearls are valued using seven factors: Size, Shape, Color, Luster, Surface quality, Nacre quality (akoya pearls only) and matching.
